A black and white photograph of the artist’s father taken at a refugee camp in Korea. In the light, you can barely make out his features. A three digit number, hand-lettered, is pinned to his shirt lapel. My mother sits hunched over, one leg up. Her eyes are closed. Her forehead rests on her knee. I often sit like this on a chair. At five second intervals, light turns to dark turns to light. The gong of a Buddhist prayer bowl strikes every ten seconds. At the same time, the lights go out.
